Nintendo subnautica9/13/2023 ![]() ![]() At one point I was chased by a Warper and clipped through a whole building. I’m not sure if it is related to the load-in distance of the map, but many times I would enter an area only to have a giant leviathan-class enemy clip through a wall and come straight for me. Perhaps the worst of it was the collision-loading and enemy clipping. Reaper Leviathan clips straight through land The game did crash on me once during an ending scene, but I’d been playing for a significant length of time and was aware that something was wrong when my oxygen meter was not depleting. There was also a persistent lag or even a freeze, such as when constructing buildings, but it never lasted more than a few seconds, but could sometimes be jarring. There were other small bugs such as textures not loading in, or sometimes there were double textures or double walls. Many times my small flashlight did a better job than my ship’s headlights. It was nothing to drive my submarine through pitch-black darkness before another lighting texture would load in and I’d finally know where I was going. The shadings and light textures, while they are decent and many times as good-as the other ports, were lack luster at best in the later areas. The lighting of this same area was extremely dark too. I would head towards what I thought was going to be the tunnel only to hit a dead end. I couldn’t find tunnels and pathways that I needed because I couldn’t see past the edge of the loaded in map. Not to give spoilers away, but one of the final areas is huge, and even using a Sonar system, the area loaded in so slowly that it was difficult to navigate. For the most part this isn’t a big deal, but it became a major issue in the end-game areas. However, the Nintendo Switch’s load-in range is greatly reduced. The Playstation 4 version had an issue where sometimes whole sections would never load in at all, but the range was still a greater distance than the player’s viewing range. To allow for a game to run smoothly, world are loaded in bit-by-bit. Most of the performance issues revolved around the world not loading in. Many are still here, including bugs related to slipping through walls or whole buildings not phasing in. I played through the whole game, now I’m not going to comment on pre-existing bugs that are from the main games. And the Playstation 4 has it’s own share of bugs (like whole swaths of the world just not loading in at all… I’ve never even seen the amber mist load in properly in the deeper areas.) Even on PC the game and sometimes feel like it’s held together with bubble gum and scotch tape. ![]() How well does Subnautica run on the Nintendo Switch? Subnautica is a beefy game. Still beautiful with some expected texture degrade Performance ![]()
